SUSTAINABILITY

Yonge Sheppard Centre is Proud to be BOMA Best Certified.

Honey Bees

Yonge Sheppard Centre in collaboration with The Toronto Bee Rescue hosts four beehives on our green rooftop. Urban beekeeping helps in protecting pollination, decrease the decline of bees, increase local honey production, and provide a greener urban environment. Last year the 4 hives produced about 100 kg of honey. Approximately 220lbs or 75 liters. Honey is calculated by weight to ensure it is not watered down by volume. 1kg = 750ml

Green Roof

Beyond Earth Hour Challenge

Yonge Sheppard Centre has 4 green roofs above the retail mall that total 68,243sf. The green roofs have both environmental and human health by mitigating local air pollutants, improving the building’s thermal performance by reducing atmospheric heating and reducing storm water runoff.

Waste and Recycling Management

Beyond Earth Hour Challenge

Waste and Recycling disposal units are located throughout the property. Tenant Recycling programs include: Cardboard Recycling, Glass, Plastic and Metal container Recycling, Paper Recycling, Cooking Oil Recycling, Light bulb and ballast Recycling, E-waste recycling, Organic Waste collection, Battery Recycling. Centralized Waste Bin Program implemented in Office Towers - Removing all desk side bins and locating four stream receptacles in central locations been proven to increase the opportunity to effectively separate waste into the correct receptacles while changing employee habits regarding waste disposal.

Energy Efficient Technology and implements

Yonge Sheppard Centre participates in Earth Hour and Sweater Day annually. All washrooms include low flow fixtures to reduce water waste and rainwater is collected in our cistern that is re-used for irrigation of exterior planters and green roof as well as power washing the parking garage and exterior. The centre implements peak demand programs in conjunction with Toronto Hydro. The parking garage has been retrofitted with LED in 2022. Occupancy sensors in all office tower washrooms, stairwells as well as the parking garage. Retail lighting is dimmed after hours. All exterior lighting is on photocell. Re-commissioned all HVAC systems to maximize their efficiency.

Environmentally Friendly and Health Transportation

The centre is conveniently and centrally located on 2 subway lines (line 1 – Yonge University and line 4 - Sheppard). To support electronic vehicles we have 14 EV Charging stations in the parking garage and 13 hybrid vehicle parking spots. Yonge Sheppard Centre partners with Smart Commute to promote sustainable commuting through on-site engagement, campaigns, clinics and workshops. The Toronto Bike Share Program has discussed future expansion plans over the next four years, looking to expand the program north of the downtown core. We are in the planning phase of adding this service to our transportation options.
